Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure Sensitize Journalists on Road Safety Issues

 

 It is open secret that traffic accidents are becoming daily occurrence on our roads, and they are claiming the lives or causing serious injuries to many innocent Gambians, some of whom are the breadwinners for their families.

The Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure (MoTWI), is on a campaign to bring sanity on our roads, and so on Monday 30th August, 2021, the Ministry conducted a day-long sensitization workshop on road safety for over 40 journalists drawn from both the print and electronic media.

The event, which was held at the NaNA conference hall, was organized to enhance road safety awareness among media practitioners, and to better harness their reporting skills on road safety issues which are peculiar to the country.

In his welcoming remarks, Mod K. Ceesay, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure said the safety of our roads is everyone’s business, especially in the face of the fatal or serious accidents, which are occurring on daily basis and becoming alarming.

He called upon journalists to create columns in their newspapers, and to provide airtime in their radio shows, dedicated to the issues of road safety on our roads.

“The Gambia is faced with many road-safety challenges, but together as partners, we should be able to tackle these challenges,” he told the participants.

PS Ceesay further assured the attendees that his Ministry was ready to work hand-in-glove with the media to further intensify the campaign in making our roads safer for every road user.

Mr. Essa Drammeh, Director of Planning at The Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, called upon the participants to utilize the knowledge gained from the workshop, and to increase the publicity and the news items on road safety and related issues.

During the day long session, many presentations were provided on global road safety statistics, The Gambia’s road safety situation, and other topics related to road safety.
